IPL Laser Treatment FAQs
What is IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive treatment that uses light energy to target and correct a variety of skin concerns. Unlike traditional lasers, IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light to treat different layers of skin and multiple issues simultaneously.
What concerns does IPL treat?
IPL is highly effective for:
-
Sun damage & pigmentation (sunspots, age spots)
-
Vascular lesions (broken capillaries, spider veins, rosacea)
-
Uneven skin tone & texture
-
Acne & acne-related redness
-
Fine lines and enlarged pores
-
Dull or tired-looking skin
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients require 3-5 sessions, spaced 3-4 weeks apart, to see optimal results. Maintenance sessions may be recommended 1-2 times per year, depending on your skin goals and lifestyle.
How long does each treatment take?
Each session typically lasts 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. It’s quick enough to fit into a lunch break!
What does the treatment feel like?
You may feel a mild snapping or stinging sensation, often compared to a rubber band snap against the skin. A cooling gel and device tip help soothe the skin throughout the treatment.
What should I do before my appointment?
To prep for your IPL treatment:
-
Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 2–4 weeks before
-
Discontinue retinoids and exfoliants for 3–5 days
-
Arrive with clean skin—no makeup, moisturizer, or SPF
-
Let us know if you’re taking antibiotics or photosensitizing medications
What’s the downtime and recovery like?
IPL is non-invasive and has minimal downtime. Common post-treatment experiences:
-
Mild redness or warmth (like a mild sunburn) for a few hours
-
Darkening of pigment spots or freckles (they will flake off in 5–10 days)
-
Avoid heat, sun exposure, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
What’s post-treatment care like?
Aftercare is key for beautiful results:
-
Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers
-
Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily
-
Avoid exfoliating products, active ingredients, or heat for 3–5 days
-
Let dark spots naturally slough off—don’t pick or scrub!
When will I see results?
Many clients notice a brighter, more even complexion after just 1 treatment, with continued improvement over several sessions. Pigmentation and redness gradually lighten over 1–3 weeks.
Is IPL safe for all skin types?
IPL is best suited for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III (lighter skin tones). For deeper skin tones (types IV–VI), alternative treatments may be recommended to prevent pigmentation risks—ask about your options during consultation.
Who should avoid IPL?
You may not be a candidate if:
-
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Have recently tanned or are using self-tanner
-
Have active infections, open lesions, or skin cancer in the treatment area
-
Are on medications that increase light sensitivity (e.g., Accutane)
